RACHEL'S HOPE

Thus said Hashem:

Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears; for there is a reward for your accomplishment - the word of Hashem - and they will return from the enemy's land. There is hope for your future - the word of Hashem - and your children will return to their border. I have indeed heard Ephraim moaning, "You have chastised me and I have become chastened, like an untrained calf; bring me back (to You) and I shall return, for you are Hashem, my G-d.

These are the days of the great home-coming of the Jewish people. For several decades, various groups have been raised up and established to assist in this prophetic event, the bringing back of the children of Abraham to the land of Israel which G-d promised to him and to his descendants. The various organizations who work hard at this endeavor are to be commended for their success. Then why another one?

The scripture quoted above, from which we draw our inspiration, describes the weeping of the matriarch, Rachel, as the Israelites were taken into captivity in Babylon.  She is promised by the Lord, that her weeping will be rewarded;  her children shall return to the Land of Israel and there is hope for the future.  These are the days of the fulfillment of this prophecy of Jeremiah.

“Aliya”, the Hebrew word that describes this present day phenomenon, has many facets. The children of Israel have been dispersed to every corner of the earth and are making their way home from prosperous western nations as well as from impoverished Third World countries. The needs of the people vary greatly and there are vast opportunities to be of support and assistance.

Our particular focus is to directly assist young couples, families with children, and the elderly who desire to return to their ancient homeland but are financially unable to do so. For some of them there is the burden of medical debts in their present nation of residence, or student loans that are a burden to young couples just starting their new life, or several months of unemployment which has pushed back the dream of moving to Israel to begin a new life. These are the people we look for and assist – these and others like them with this type of hindrance to making Aliya to Israel. Rachel’s Hope evaluates the financial impediments to proceeding with Aliya and does what it can to ‘clear the path to Zion’ for these families.

As an arm of Lekarev, we are able to disperse the gifts sent to Rachel’s Hope directly to the people who need them. We do not take out percentages for extensive overhead or publicity. We also make available to donors as much information as possible, including photos, about the families they have helped. Rather than see their gift as a ‘drop into a big bucket’, we seek to connect donors and families to make the donor’s contribution much more than a gift – it’s also a door to a new friendship which will keep alive the prophetic reality of what Rachel’s Hope is all about.
